Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says his country has applied to join the BRICS group of emerging economies. He is seeking support for the bid from Russia, the current chair of the organization. Anwar met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Sunday near the capital of Kuala Lumpur. Lavrov visited Malaysia for two days after ASEAN foreign ministerial meetings in Laos. Anwar said on Facebook their talks focused on the application. He said Malaysia's membership would benefit both their countries. The Malaysian foreign ministry says Lavrov assured Anwar that Russia will support Malaysia's participation in the organization. BRICS is a cooperation platform formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa added soon after. Some Middle Eastern and African countries have since joined. Thailand also hopes to sign up.
