Japan supplies Ukraine with gear to remove Russia-planted landmines NHK

Japan and other parties have supplied Ukraine with equipment to clear landmines planted by Russian forces during their ongoing invasion.

The United Nations Development Programme, or UNDP, held a ceremony to mark the provision in Ukraine's capital Kyiv on Thursday, which was also the UN-designated International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

Participants included Japan's Ambassador to Ukraine Matsuda Kuninori, as well as representatives of the European Union and other parties. Officials of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine were also present.

The State Emergency Service says potentially mined zones in Ukraine are equivalent to roughly a quarter of its total land area.

The latest batch of supplies will be given through UNDP to more than 1,000 mine clearing personnel in Ukraine.

Japanese aid includes a Japan-made special vehicle, 570 mine detectors and 475 pieces of protective clothing.

The deputy head of the State Emergency Service, Roman Prymush, said no one has died during mine removal missions in Ukraine this year thanks to protective suits and other assistance. He said all staff engaged in the operations are feeling Japanese support.

Ambassador Matsuda said Japan has the most extensive experience and knowhow on mine detection and removal. He added Japan will provide support in new spheres so that its personnel will be able to develop and produce equipment in Ukraine in tandem with local staff.
