A Japanese woman who raised more than 3,000 Korean orphans has been remembered ahead of the 110th anniversary of her birth at the end of this month.
On Friday, about 750 people from South Korea and Japan attended a ceremony in South Korea's southwestern city of Mokpo to honor Tauchi Chizuko.
Born in the Japanese western prefecture of Kochi in 1912, Tauchi moved to Mokpo when she was seven years old. She married a Korean man who ran an orphanage in the city.
After her husband went missing during the Korean War, she continued to raise orphans until her death at the age of 56. She is known as the "mother of orphans" in South Korea.
A message from South Korea President Yoon Suk-yeol was read out during the ceremony. He praised Tauchi's achievements, saying her love and dedication to protecting children moved the hearts of people in both countries.
The eldest son of Tauchi, Yoon Kee, who serves as the head of the organization that runs the orphanage, said he is thankful to the people of Mokpo for remembering his mother.
He expressed hope that the memory will help promote exchanges between Japan and South Korea.
