A: The Emperor and Empress had visitors! The President and First Lady of Nepal came to the Imperial Palace.

B: Oh wow! Really? What did they do?

A: They shook hands and chatted! It’s a big deal because Japan and Nepal are celebrating 70 years of being friends officially.

B: Seventy years! That's a long time. Did the Emperor say anything?

A: Yeah! He showed the President photos from when he visited Nepal a long time ago, back in 1987. He said it’s a really beautiful country.

B: Amazing! What kind of photos?

A: One showed women getting water from a mountain stream. The Emperor said that made him really interested in water issues. He gave them the photo as a gift!

B: That’s so thoughtful. Did they talk about anything serious?

A: They did! The Emperor expressed sympathy for the earthquake Nepal had in 2015. And thanked Nepal for helping Japan after the 2011 earthquake.

B: That's really nice of them. What did the President say?

A: He thanked Japan for all the help! He also said a lot of Nepalese people are here in Japan – around 300,000 - working and studying, and they’re being treated well.

B: Wow, that’s a lot of people! Did he ask anything interesting?

A: He actually asked the Emperor and Empress to visit Nepal!

B: Really? Did they say yes?

A: They didn’t say yes, but the Empress said she'd heard Nepal is beautiful, even though she hasn’t been there yet.
