The Upper House of Japan's Diet has passed a bill to offer compensation to victims of the country's now-defunct Eugenic Protection Law. The legislation had allowed forced sterilization of people with mental or intellectual disabilities. The law offers 15 million yen, or more than 100,000 dollars, to people were forcibly sterilized, 5 million yen to their spouses, and 2 million yen to women who were forced to have an abortion. The bill received unanimous support in the Lower House plenary session on Monday. Also, the Upper House approved a resolution admitting government responsibility, with repentance and remorse, for promoting wrongful policies based on eugenics.
