Ukraine prepares for counteroffensive by forming new brigades NHK

Ukraine says it is preparing for a counteroffensive by forming and training new brigades. This comes as fierce fighting continues in the eastern city of Bakhmut.

Russia's defense ministry said on Thursday that Russian assault teams captured four areas in the northwestern and southwestern parts of Bakhmut with the support of paratrooper units.

A Ukrainian national guard official said at a news conference on Thursday that the country's forces have secured logistical routes in western Bakhmut.

The official said nine new brigades are being formed with many volunteer recruits. The official added that commanders are pushing ahead with training.

On Wednesday, the leader of Russia's private military company, the Wagner Group, reported that there is another ammunition shortage. He noted that Ukraine may launch a counteroffensive when the weather conditions improve in the region.

A US think tank, the Institute for the Study of War, pointed out on Wednesday that anxiety is spreading in Russia about a possible counteroffensive by Ukraine.

Russia's presidential office announced on Thursday that President Vladimir Putin will deliver a speech in Saint Petersburg on Friday. Putin will reportedly talk about the ways in which service members sent to Ukraine and their families will be supported.
