Israeli forces say they have launched attacks against the Islamic group Hamas in the southern Gaza city of Rafah and an area in northern Gaza.

Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said on Saturday that its forces have "eliminated dozens of terrorists" and "exposed vast amounts of weapons" in their operations in Rafah.

More than 1 million displaced people are sheltering in the city.

Hagari also said that Israel's operations against Hamas in Rafah "remain limited in scope" and "have avoided densely populated areas."

The spokesperson stressed that prior to the operations, the Israeli military had urged people in Rafah to temporarily move toward what it calls "humanitarian areas" along the coast.

The military also revealed on Saturday that it was conducting attacks in Jabalia in northern Gaza, saying Hamas is trying to regroup there. Israeli forces had earlier claimed to have put northern Gaza under control.

It said it had called on residents in the area to evacuate to Gaza City. The current population of Jabalia is believed to be around 150,000.

Qatar-based satellite news network Al Jazeera reported that the Israeli military had started to intensify the bombardment of Jabalia, destroying residential houses.

Al Jazeera quoted a local doctor as saying that his hospital lacks medical supplies and fuel for power generation, but injured women and children are still being brought there.

Gaza health authorities said on Sunday that 35,034 people have been killed in the enclave since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October.
