A disaster drill was carried out for foreign residents of a city in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Explanations were given in easy-to-understand Japanese.
                
About 60 people, including Chinese, South Korean, German citizens, participated in the event organized by the city of Koshigaya on Saturday. Nearly 8,000 foreign nationals live in the city.
                
Fire department officials explained the functions of residential fire alarms and the importance of having them installed.
                
Participants experienced strong jolts on an earthquake-simulation vehicle and learned how to prepare for possible disasters.
                
The event also provided an opportunity to learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use automatic external defibrillators.
                
A South Korean resident said the training was a good experience, because there are many natural disasters in Japan.
                
A city official noted that foreign residents can be isolated in the community. He called on people to communicate on a regular basis so that they can help each other in the event of a disaster.
