Heavy snow forecast along mountains in northern Kanto from Tues. to Wed. NHK

Weather officials in Japan are forecasting heavy snow, especially along the mountainous areas in northern Kanto from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says a low pressure system accompanied by a front is bringing rain and snow to the Kanto-Koshin region.

The low is expected to advance east-northeast along the southern coast of Japan's main island while developing and will bring heavy snow, mainly to the areas along the mountains.

In the 24 hours until Wednesday noon, up to 35 centimeters of snowfall is forecast in the mountainous area in northern Kanto. Up to 30 centimeters are expected in Koshin.
The flatlands in northern Kanto, areas from Hakone to Tama and Chichibu, may have as much as 10 centimeters.

Officials say if temperatures dip lower than expected, there may be heavy snowfall that would warrant an alert. They are calling on people to be careful of the effects such precipitation may have on transportation. People are also advised to be careful of frozen roads, collapsing agricultural greenhouses and snow accumulating on trees.

An avalanche advisory has been issued in northern Nagano Prefecture. An avalanche occurred in the prefecture on Saturday. Officials are calling on people to be careful in places with heavy accumulated snowfall or where heavy snow is forecast.

Meanwhile, rain is forecast in the flatlands in southern Kanto and the Izu Islands until Wednesday.
Torrential downpours are forecast early Wednesday in the Izu Islands, where atmospheric conditions will become extremely unstable with the approaching low.

Powerful gusts of wind and stormy seas are forecast on Wednesday. Officials are calling on people to be careful of landslides, high waves, gusts, lightning and tornadoes.
