COP28 adopts document calling for transition away from fossil fuels NHK

The COP28 UN climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates has adopted an agreement document calling for transitioning away from fossil fuels. The agreement does not mention a phasing out of them.

Delegates at COP28 reached an agreement on the outcome document on Wednesday. The conference was originally scheduled to end on Tuesday.

Western countries and island nations had been calling for the document to mention a phase out of fossil fuels, while oil producing countries and others opposed such wording.

Delegates had been striving to bridge gaps between both sides.

The adopted document calls for a transition away from fossil fuels and accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050.
