A Japanese business leader says he's hoping for a swift return to political stability in South Korea following the turmoil of this week's martial law crisis.

Kobayashi Ken is the Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He says he's very concerned about the upheaval triggered by President Yoon Suk-yeol's decision to declare martial law. Yoon lifted the order hours later.

Kobayashi said: "It's possible that the supply chains between Japan and South Korea will be disrupted by this situation. The result would be that the political turmoil in Seoul has a very significant impact on the South Korean economy."

Kobayashi says the situation could have a damaging knock-on effect for Japan's economy.

He says ties between the Asian neighbors have improved dramatically due to efforts by former Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and President Yoon.

But he worries that the political confusion in Seoul could hamper the diplomatic work of Kishida's successor, Ishiba Shigeru.
