Canadian broadcaster shuts down Beijing bureau NHK

Canadian public broadcaster CBC has shut down its Beijing bureau after a 40-year presence in China.

According to CBC, Chinese officials ignored repeated requests for a journalist work visa. The broadcaster says it had been asking for the visa since October 2022, after its last reporter left the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian responded on Thursday, saying CBC's reporter left the country voluntarily two years ago. Zhao added that foreign journalists in China must follow Chinese laws and regulations, and abide by China's press ethics.

Last year, China's government banned Britain's BBC World News from broadcasting in the country.
