US approves arms sale worth 300 million dollars to Taiwan NHK

The US government has approved an arms sale worth 300 million dollars to Taiwan at a time when China is increasing its military pressure on the island.

The government announced on Friday that it had notified Congress of its decision to sell supplementary communications equipment and other apparatus to help manage tactical information. The United States will also provide Taiwan with technical assistance.

The government said the proposed support would help improve command and control capabilities of Taiwan's forces as well as their capabilities to meet current and future threats.

The implementation of the arms sale would require an estimated 26 US government personnel to provide engineering and technical support.

The move is apparently aimed at showing the US government's commitment to Taiwan's security in the run-up to the island's presidential election on January 13.
