US President Donald Trump says the 10-percent baseline tariff will basically remain in place on all countries, even after trade deals are reached. A minimum baseline levy of 10 percent on all countries went into effect on April 5. On Thursday, the US announced a trade deal with Britain, bringing down the levy on its vehicles from the current 25 percent to the 10 percent minimum. Trump told reporters on Friday that "there could be an exception at some point" but that a baseline of a 10 percent minimum will basically be maintained regardless of trade deals. Trump also said that he foresees four or five more trade deals "coming immediately" with other countries. In a social media post on Friday, Trump said that an "80% Tariff on China seems right," suggesting he could lower the figure from the current additional 145 percent imposed on Chinese goods. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later said at a news conference that Trump will not unilaterally bring down tariffs on China. She added, "We need to see concessions from them as well."
