Humanitarian aid groups make emergency appeal for Gaza NHK

The heads of 18 UN agencies and non-governmental organizations providing humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip have jointly called for an immediate ceasefire.

The Principals of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee, or IASC, made the emergency appeal in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement says diseases are rampant in Gaza and famine is looming. It adds that "hospitals have turned into battlefields."

The Israeli military is continuing airstrikes and ground operations in northern and central Gaza.

The Israeli government is apparently determined to wage a ground offensive targeting the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where nearly 1.5 million people are taking shelter.
Israeli forces believe the last remaining stronghold of the Islamic group Hamas is located in the city.

The statement says well over one million displaced people are crammed into a "small sliver of land" and warns that "further escalation of violence in this densely populated area would cause mass casualties."
