Fukushima seafood BBQ promotes prefecture's marine products NHK

People have enjoyed freshly grilled seafood caught off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at a promotional event north of Tokyo.

Sunday's barbeque at a roadside facility in Utsunomiya City in Tochigi Prefecture was organized to support Fukushima's fishers.

The prefecture's fishing industry is grappling with concerns about reputational damage following the release of treated and diluted water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.

Visitors savored grilled squid, shrimp, horse mackerel and other ingredients prepared for 100 people. The barbeque was offered at a low price for non-profit purposes.

A woman who came with her child said she is happy to help fishers in Fukushima by eating delicious seafood from the prefecture.

The company that organized the barbeque said it wants to hold similar events across the country to support Fukushima's fishing industry.

An official of the roadside facility said he hopes many people will have a chance to enjoy marine products from Fukushima when cookout events are held on a regular basis.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant suffered a triple meltdown in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Water used to cool molten fuel has been mixing with rain and groundwater.

The accumulated water is being treated to remove most radioactive substances, but still contains tritium.

Before releasing the treated water, the plant's operator dilutes it to reduce tritium levels to about one-seventh of the World Health Organization's guidance level for drinking water.
