The United Nations World Food Programme says the termination of US funding to its emergency programs could put millions of lives at risk. The WFP issued a statement on social media on Monday. It said that it is "deeply concerned by recent notifications from the US administration indicating that funding for emergency food assistance in 14 countries has been terminated." The WFP said, "If implemented, this could amount to a death sentence for millions of people facing extreme hunger and starvation." The agency said that it is "in contact with the US administration to seek clarification and to urge for continued support for these life-saving programmes." The WFP did not disclose the names of the 14 countries. The Associated Press, however, on Monday quoted informed sources as saying they are "Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and 11 other impoverished countries, many of them struggling with conflict." The United States is the largest contributor to the WFP. The WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 during the first term of President Donald Trump. A White House spokesperson at the time emphasized the significance of international assistance.
