US President Donald Trump has reacted to remarks made by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that US attacks could spark a regional conflict.
Trump has been demanding that Iran accept a deal that will prevent it from possessing nuclear weapons. He is ramping up pressure by deploying the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to the US Central Command's area of responsibility, which covers the Middle East.
Trump told reporters on Sunday, "We have the biggest, most powerful ships in the world over there, very close, couple of days."
Asked about Khamenei's remarks, Trump said he hopes that Washington will reach an agreement with Tehran. He went on to say, "We don't make a deal, then we'll find out whether or not he was right."
US news website Axios on Sunday cited multiple sources as saying that Turkey, Egypt and Qatar are arranging a meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior Iranian officials.
The countries are reportedly trying to hold the meeting in the Turkish capital, Ankara, later this week.
Observers are waiting to see whether negotiations will take place and lead to easing tensions.
