A: Hey, have you heard about the news lately? B: No, what's up? A: Well, get this! Japan's Defense Ministry spotted a Chinese aircraft carrier sailing in their exclusive economic zone near an island called Minamitorishima. B: Wait, where's that? A: It's one of Tokyo's Ogasawara Islands, and it's at Japan's eastern-most point in the Pacific. This is the first time a Chinese aircraft carrier has been confirmed in that area. B: Whoa, that sounds serious! A: Yeah, they were doing takeoff and landing exercises for their fighter jets and helicopters out there too. China might be using this island chain as a defense line against US forces if things get tough. B: Man, it seems like tensions are heating up between those two powers. A: Definitely! The Japanese Defense Ministry is keeping an eye on the situation and will continue monitoring. ---------------- Japan's Defense Ministry says a Chinese aircraft carrier has been spotted in the country's exclusive economic zone near Minamitorishima Island in the Pacific. The ministry said the Maritime Self-Defense Force confirmed on Saturday that the aircraft carrier Liaoning, a missile destroyer, and two other Chinese naval vessels were sailing in waters about 300 kilometers southwest of the island. Minamitorishima, which is part of Tokyo's Ogasawara Islands, sits at Japan's eastern-most point. Ministry officials said this is the first confirmed entry of a Chinese aircraft carrier into the area. They said takeoff and landing exercises of carrier-borne fighter jets and helicopters were also confirmed on Sunday on the high seas outside Japan's EEZ. China is believed to have set the so-called "second island chain," stretching from the Ogasawara Islands to Guam, as one of its defense lines against US forces in the event of hostilities. The area where the Chinese vessels were spotted is situated along this "second island chain." The Defense Ministry believes the latest operation is aimed at enhancing the Liaoning's operational capabilities and abilities to execute operations in far-flung locations. The ministry says it is continuing surveillance and monitoring activities.
