More than one week has passed since the devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey and Syria. The death toll now exceeds 41,000. But rescuers are still pulling survivors from the rubble of collapsed buildings.
                
Crews found a man and a young girl alive in the wreckage of their home in the Turkish province of Hatay.
In a different region, there was another incredible rescue.
A 77-year old woman was pulled out of the debris after being trapped for 212 hours.
                
Media attention is turning to the cause of collapse for so many buildings. Some are blaming illegal renovations. A man living nearby said a business owner had removed a pillar to expand his floor space.
                
A Japanese architect based in Turkey believes lax enforcement of building regulations is partly to blame for the destruction.  Moriwaki Yoshinori, General Manager of Hazama Ando Corporation Turkey, says governments have granted builders with so-called &quot;construction amnesties&quot; which exempt them from paying fines.
                
&quot;Granting amnesty in architecture is unacceptable. It&#039;s just like murder to allow builders to violate codes. They should stop this,&quot; Moriwaki said.
                
The expert says Turkish authorities need to fix the system before the regions start to rebuild.
