An expert on US politics says US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy had very different intentions at their failed summit last week.
        
                    
                  
The two sides got into a heated argument and failed to sign a planned agreement on Ukraine&#039;s mineral resources at the meeting.
        
                    
                  
Sophia University Professor Maeshima Kazuhiro said Trump had wanted to appeal to his supporters by using the summit to show that he had won the right to Ukrainian minerals.
        
                    
                  
But the professor said Zelenskyy&#039;s stance was that granting the right to the minerals semi-permanently would not guarantee Ukraine&#039;s security. He added that Zelenskyy was pursuing diplomacy with the fate of his nation at risk.
        
                    
                  
Maeshima said Zelenskyy should have said something which was nearly impossible for him to say -- that he would pursue a substantial dialogue with Russia -- so as not to anger Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
        
                    
                  
The professor said Zelenskyy needed to represent Ukrainians who have lost their families, and his decision to choose that path led to the spat.
        
                    
                  
Maeshima said Trump used the heated argument to show that Zelenskyy is stubborn, not interested in peace negotiations with Russia, and a man who sticks to his own idea.
        
                    
                  
Maeshima said the failed summit will have a major negative impact on Zelenskyy. He concluded that the Ukrainian president is standing in a very difficult position to repair the relationship with the US president.
