Japan's World Baseball Classic champions welcomed home by ecstatic fans NHK

Members of Japan's winning team in the World Baseball Classic have been greeted by about 1,200 jubilant fans at Narita Airport, near Tokyo.

The team known as Samurai Japan clinched the WBC title for the third time on Tuesday, beating the United States 3-2 in the final in Miami in the US state of Florida.

Manager Kuriyama Hideki and his players arrived at the airport on a chartered flight shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Airline staff handed bouquets to Kuriyama and catcher Nakamura Yuhei.

Huge cheers erupted when infielder Murakami Munetaka, pitcher Sasaki Roki and other star players appeared in the arrival lobby. Fans took photos and videos.

The members will now return to their professional clubs to prepare for the season that will open in about a week.
