An international human rights organization says more than 140 people have been killed in clashes between Iranian security forces and people protesting the death in custody of a young woman. 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested for allegedly not properly wearing the headscarf that is mandatory for women in public. She later died on September 16. Her death sparked the ongoing month-long protests with demonstrators arguing she was beaten by police. The Iranian government says she died of a sickness. Sporadic clashes between the security forces and demonstrators still continue. Amnesty International says it confirmed 144 people, including 23 children aged from 11 to 17, had been killed by the security forces as of October 3. Many young people are taking part in the protests. Some Iranian intellectuals say frustration is mounting among younger generations who are obtaining information from other countries through the Internet. An Iranian parliamentary committee published a report on Sunday that points to the need to review rules on the headscarf through legal arrangements or other means.
