Smelt fishing season begins at frozen lake in northern Japan NHK

The smelt fishing season is underway at Lake Hachiro in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan.

On Sunday, temperatures fell to around minus 1 degree Celsius around the frozen lake, and the ice was about 20 centimeters thick.

Anglers drilled holes in the surface to catch smelt that are about 10 centimeters long.

A group of local enthusiasts says the ice became thicker after the cold snap in late January. The season will continue through the end of February.

A man in his 30s from Kazuno City said he comes to the lake once or twice a year to enjoy fishing. He added that he is looking forward to having deep-fried smelt and some beer.
