The smelt fishing season is underway at Lake Hachiro in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. On Sunday, temperatures fell to around minus 1 degree Celsius around the frozen lake, and the ice was about 20 centimeters thick. Anglers drilled holes in the surface to catch smelt that are about 10 centimeters long. A group of local enthusiasts says the ice became thicker after the cold snap in late January. The season will continue through the end of February. A man in his 30s from Kazuno City said he comes to the lake once or twice a year to enjoy fishing. He added that he is looking forward to having deep-fried smelt and some beer.
