The leaders of Vietnam and Indonesia have held phone talks with US President-elect Donald Trump. The calls came amid uncertainty about the incoming US administration especially in terms of the economy.
                
Vietnam says top leader To Lam congratulated Trump on his election victory on Monday. Both reportedly agreed to step up economic cooperation.
                
Vietnam also says Lam invited Trump to visit, and Trump agreed.
                
Some observers in Vietnam hope manufacturing companies with production bases in China will accelerate expansion into Vietnam to avoid the high tariffs Trump may impose on goods from China.
                
Last month, a Vietnamese real estate company disclosed it had concluded a deal with The Trump Organization to develop a luxury resort with a golf course that is worth about 1.5 billion dollars.
                
But others worry Trump&#039;s protectionist tendencies could also affect Vietnam, as its trade surplus against the US continues to increase.
                
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also congratulated Trump by phone. He was in Washington to attend meetings, including one with US President Joe Biden.
                
Prabowo earlier held summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday in Beijing, his first overseas trip since taking office.
                
The country apparently aims to strike a balance between the two superpowers. Indonesia has long pursued a non-aligned foreign policy, which Prabowo has said he will continue.
