Russia reacts sharply to Biden's promise to provide Ukraine with Patriot NHK

Russia has reacted sharply to US President Joe Biden's pledge to provide Ukraine with the Patriot missile defense system.

The reaction came after Biden announced nearly 1.9 billion dollars' worth of military aid for Ukraine, including Patriot surface-to-air missiles, after he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House in Washington on Wednesday. Biden stressed that the US will continue supporting Ukraine.

In response to media requests for comment on the Biden-Zelenskyy summit, Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, posted his statement on social media on Thursday.

The ambassador said, "The provocative actions by the US are steadily leading to an escalation, the consequences of which cannot even be imagined."

Russia's presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said what Biden and Zelenskyy discussed during the meeting proved that the US is fighting a proxy war with Russia.

Peskov warned that US supplies of Patriot systems to Ukraine will not contribute to settling the conflict and, on the contrary, will prolong the pain for Ukrainians.

A number of Russian media outlets characterized Zelenskyy's latest visit to the US as a failure, citing skepticism from some Republican lawmakers against the latest huge amount of military aid.
