Multiple media outlets have reported that discussions are underway on a pause in the fighting between Israel and Hamas, and the release of some of the hostages being held by the Palestinian group. The Israeli military said on Wednesday that it had destroyed 130 entrances of underground tunnels built by Hamas. The forces are believed to be demolishing the tunnels at a rapid pace, mainly in northern Gaza. Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said at a news conference on Wednesday night that "Hamas has lost control and is continuing to lose control in the north." Hagari reiterated there would be no ceasefire, but said Israel has been allowing for humanitarian pauses. Some Israeli media outlets reported on Wednesday that the relevant parties are soon expected to agree to an Egyptian-brokered humanitarian pause in the fighting and the release of some hostages. The New York Times has quoted officials close to the matter as saying that discussions are in progress for Hamas to release up to 15 hostages in exchange for Israel pausing attacks on Gaza for three days. A senior Hamas official said at a news conference on Wednesday that Israeli civilians and foreigners will be released if the conditions of a ceasefire are met. The official asserted that Israel is to blame for the slow progress in the hostages' release.
