Japan's immigration authority says it will offer in-person multilingual consultations in Ishikawa Prefecture on Thursday for foreign residents affected by the New Year's Day quake that hit Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures. The Immigration Services Agency has extended the application periods for renewals of residence cards or other legal procedures in response to the disaster. The consultations are scheduled to take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa's prefectural capital. The venue is the Ishikawa Prefectural International Exchange Center in the city's Hon-machi district. Immigration officials will respond in person to any questions affected foreign residents may have. Queries will also be accepted online between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Those who wish to seek online support are advised to find the meeting ID and password at the webpage of the Immigration Services Agency. Consultations will be offered in languages such as English, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Indonesian, Chinese and Portuguese. Services in languages for which interpreters are not present at the venue will be made available via a three-party call. The Nagoya immigration bureau, which covers the affected regions, plans to accept queries from local authorities and other organizations working to help foreign residents. Officials in Ishikawa say more than 16,000 foreign nationals were registered as residents as of December, 2022.
