The leaders of Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the US and South Korean militaries have agreed that trilateral security cooperation is essential in dealing with North Korea. SDF Chief of Staff Gen. Yamazaki Koji, US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, and South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Kim Seung-kyum sat down for talks at the Pentagon on Thursday. The US said the officers discussed the North's recent series of missile launches as well as its nuclear development. It said they agreed on the importance of bilateral and trilateral coordination to bolster regional security. Milley reiterated Washington's ironclad commitment to defending Japan and South Korea. The US Defense Department said that Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman will visit Japan next week for talks with Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Mori Takeo and South Korean First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun-dong. The three held telephone talks following North Korea's launch of a ballistic missile that flew over Japan on October 4. The North has been firing missiles at an unprecedented rate in recent weeks. Concerns are growing that Pyongyang could conduct its seventh nuclear test.
