Japanese businesses are gearing up for greater use of drones following a change in the law allowing flights in urban areas beyond the operator's line of sight. The government is screening various types of drones made by companies to make sure they meet safety standards, checking for any problems with batteries and propellers. The revised civil aeronautics law came into effect on December 5. It allows for flights over residential areas with minimal restrictions. Businesses are expected to use drones for deliveries, and to inspect highways, bridges and other infrastructure. Operators will need a national license. The first successful candidates will be announced next month.
