Russia's defense ministry has said Moscow and other seven regions of the country were targeted by a total of 36 drones.

The ministry made the announcement on Sunday, the final day of the country's presidential vote. It said five of the drones were aimed at Moscow.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on social media that drones were shot down in Domodedovo and other areas. He said debris fell, but there were no casualties.

Flight restrictions were reportedly put in place at three airports after the drone launches, including Domodedovo International Airport.

The defense ministry says 17 drones flew to the southern region of Krasnodar, bordering Ukraine. Local authorities said an attack on an oil refinery left one person dead.

Officials said another person was killed in the western region of Belgorod.

Voters headed to the polls from Friday in an election set to give President Vladimir Putin a fifth term. Russia is also conducting voting in the Ukrainian regions of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Moscow unilaterally declared its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the other four regions in September 2022.

A senior Russian official in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia reported an explosion near a polling station in Berdyansk, calling it sabotage committed by Ukrainian terrorists.

The official also said Ukraine used drones to strike a polling station in another district of the region, causing a fire to break out at the building. The official said no casualties were reported.

Ukraine is believed to be carrying out cross-border attacks against Russia recently, as well as drone attacks.

Putin has accused Ukraine of obstructing voting and has suggested retaliating.
