Xi: China-built rail link benefits Indonesian, Chinese people NHK

Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized China's contribution in building a major infrastructure project in Indonesia, where he was visiting.

Construction of a high-speed railway is ongoing to connect Jakarta and the city of Bandung some 140 kilometers away.

The Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway is a marquee project in China's flagship Belt and Road Initiative.

Xi, who was visiting Bali to attend the Group of 20 summit, on Wednesday inspected a trial run of the China-made high-speed railway via video link with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

In the talks between the two leaders that followed, Xi said the project has not only benefited the people of Indonesia and China, but has created positive effects at the regional and global levels.

Xi added the project set an example showing that unity and cooperation between developing nations can bring about win-win results.

After a fierce bidding competition with Japan, China was ultimately chosen to build the rail link.

The initial plan was that the line would start commercial operations in 2019, but delays have pushed back the operational date to next year.

Xi is making a trip abroad for the first time since he began an unprecedented third term in office.

He is believed to have made the remarks to argue that the Belt and Road Initiative is contributing to regional and global development.
