Japanese dog owners have gathered in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido so their animals could compete against each other in sled races. About 100 dogs divided into around 60 teams took part in 500-meter and one-kilometer races in the snow-covered village of Shinshinotsu on Sunday. Some dogs went off course or stopped running, but many crossed the finish line as spectators cheered and took photos. A man from the prefectural capital of Sapporo came with his Siberian husky. He said the weather was great and his dog lived up to expectations. The event was organized by the village and the Japan Federation of Sleddog Sports. Federation chief Hayashi Satoko said each of the canine participants gave a memorable performance.
