China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi says his country supports the United Nation's central role in international affairs, and expressed Beijing's endorsement of multilateralism at the world body. Wang chaired a Security Council meeting on multilateralism at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday. Wang said, "China supports the UN in playing a central role in international affairs and makes continuous contribution to the UN cause." He added that China is "the largest developing country in the world," and its personnel "have become a crucial force in UN peacekeeping operations." Wang's remarks are in sharp contrast to US President Donald Trump's more critical attitude toward the United Nations. Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea said, "China has consistently exploited its status as a developing nation within international organizations to advance its separate agenda." Shea added that, "there is a longstanding, deep, anti-Israel bias within the UN." She said the United States is currently conducting a review of its support to the UN. She said Washington "will consider whether the actions of the organization are serving American interests, and whether it can be reformed." Trump signed an executive order on February 4 withdrawing the United States from the UN Human Rights Council and called for reduced US funding to certain UN organizations.
