Tel Aviv car attack kills Italian tourist, injures 5 NHK

A car rammed into pedestrians in Tel Aviv on Friday night, killing a foreign tourist and injuring five on a seaside promenade in Israel's commercial hub. Israeli police are investigating it as a terrorist attack.

Police say the person killed was an Italian man. The driver was identified as an Arab citizen of an Israeli village. Police shot him dead at the scene.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas praised it as retaliation for Israeli raids on the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

The incident came hours after a shooting attack on an Israeli family in the occupied West Bank left two people dead.

Tensions have been mounting between Israelis and Palestinians since April, when Israeli security forces raided the Al-Aqsa mosque, triggering Palestinian protests.

Early on Friday, Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon in response to a rocket attack.
