Kansai Electric Power Company has applied for a 20-year extension on the operation of two aging reactors at one of its nuclear power plants in central Japan.
                
The company filed the application with the Nuclear Regulation Authority on Tuesday. The extension covers the No.3 and No.4 reactors at the Takahama plant in Fukui Prefecture.
                
The operational life span of nuclear reactors in Japan has been limited to 40 years in principle. But their operation could be extended by up to 20 years if they pass screening by the authority.
                
The two reactors at the Takahama plant will be 40 years old in 2025.
                
The utility said no problems were found in a special inspection of the reactors that started in September last year.
                
Japan&#039;s Diet is deliberating on legislation that would allow nuclear power plants to operate beyond their 60-year limit, but Kansai Electric plans to proceed with the extension application under the current system.
                
Four reactors, including No.1 and No.2 reactors at the Takahama plant, have already passed screening by the regulator to extend their operations.
