A man was killed and two other people were injured after they were attacked by a man holding what appeared to be a knife in front of the main station in Nagano City, central Japan, at around 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Local police said a man in his 40s was stabbed and later confirmed dead at a hospital and that another man in his 30s was seriously hurt but is conscious.
They said a woman in her 40s was also targeted but unhurt apart from a minor injury she suffered when she fell over.
The assailant fled the scene on foot. Investigators say he is slim, around 1.7 meters tall and appeared to be in his 40s.
The investigators say the three were waiting for a bus at Nagano Station and do not appear to have known the attacker.
They suspect the incident was a random attack.
