But concern is mounting around the globe that the election of Donald Trump may lead to more protectionist policies in the US, and further intensify trade friction between Washington and Beijing.

Trump pledged during his campaign to hit imports with tariffs of 10 to 20 percent.

Both the US and China are APEC members. The forum promotes free and open trade. Now, the question is whether members can find enough common ground to forge a joint statement.
