The Japan Meteorological Agency has fixed a glitch in its Himawari-9 weather satellite imagery provision service more than half a day after disruptions began.

The agency said problems began at around 4 a.m. on Monday, when white and black lines began to emerge across images from the satellite.

Engineers investigating the glitch found that the temperature of an infrared radiation sensor mounted on the satellite had spiked by roughly 40 degrees Celsius.

The service was fully restored at around 6 p.m. after the engineers activated the satellite's cooling system.

Weather officials use infrared images of Earth from the satellite to estimate the strength of typhoons. The officials said while Himawari-9 imagery was unavailable, they instead relied on readings of winds and previously recorded data.

Officials said there is currently no problem with data sent from the satellite. They said the cooling system may not have been working properly.

The agency apologized for the inconvenience caused by the prolonged disruption. It plans a further investigation.
