The death toll from a powerful cyclone that struck Malawi and neighboring countries has topped 100. Cyclone Freddy made landfall in southern Africa earlier this month. The storm has brought heavy rain, causing landslides and floods in Malawi, Mozambique and elsewhere. Local authorities and others said at least 136 people are confirmed to have died in these countries. Malawi suffered the heaviest toll, with 99 people reportedly dead as of Monday. The Malawian government has declared a state of emergency in the hard-hit southern part of the country. Officials say the damage could extend further. Local authorities are continuing rescue operations. The United Nations says the tropical storm has forced more than 10,000 people in Malawi to evacuate. UN officials are also warning that hygiene conditions could worsen in the affected areas and bring an outbreak of cholera and other infectious diseases.
