It has been four weeks since major earthquakes struck the Noto Peninsula on New Year's Day. More than 230 people have been confirmed dead. Over 14-thousand evacuees are still living in shelters.

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake upended people's lives. More than 43-thousand homes were damaged in and around the Noto area.

The tremors also triggered widespread liquefaction. Experts inspected the area on Sunday, but said they still don't know the full scale of the damage.

Authorities in Ishikawa say about 14-thousand 500 people are still in evacuation centers. More than 90 people are living in their cars. Many homes still are without running water. There is only a slim possibility of most residents returning home. So now, officials are looking to move survivors to hotels in areas unaffected by the quake.

Officials say temporary housing will be built as early as next week for those who evacuate long-term.
