The Chinese government is attempting to instill some calm after a turbulent week that saw Wang Yi reinstated as foreign minister following the dismissal of Qin Gang.

In a speech posted to the ministry's website, Wang says he will follow the guidance of President Xi Jinping and resolutely defend China's national sovereignty.

Qin succeeded Wang as foreign minister about six months ago, but was ousted from the role earlier this month.

Reports about Qin's time in office are back on the ministry's website after being taken offline. But an explanation about his dismissal has not yet been given.

Speculation has been rife. Some rumors suggest he has health problems or is under investigation for relations with a reporter in Hong Kong.

Wang also heads the Communist Party's Central Foreign Affairs Commission, making him China's top diplomat.
