South Korea's National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik has attended a military parade and other events in Beijing. China held the massive parade to mark the 80th anniversary of victory over Japan in World War Two.



World leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the event on Wednesday.



The assembly speaker's office says Woo shook hands with Kim before watching the parade.



The office also says that Woo spoke with China's President Xi Jinping and Putin.



The Russian leader reportedly asked Woo how he views inter-Korean relations, as well as what message the speaker wanted to be delivered to Kim at a summit with North Korea.



Woo reportedly said that he hopes the two Koreas will open an era of peace and prosperity. He also stressed the importance of establishing peace on the peninsula despite facing challenges, adding he will make efforts toward that purpose.
