North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile, likely fell into sea NHK

The Japan Coast Guard is in the area gathering information. As of 1 p.m. Japan time, it says there were no reports of damage to vessels in the area.

Some experts believe North Korea's intention was to react to the upcoming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.

It could also have been a way to show off Pyongyang's missile development progress. North Korea last launched an alleged ballistic missile in November. Monday's launch is the first in 2025.
