Japan&#039;s Defense Ministry says North Korea launched what appeared to be a ballistic missile on Monday. It appears to have later fallen into the sea.
                
The South Korean military says it was likely an intermediate-range ballistic missile, launched from near Pyongyang.
                
Japan&#039;s Defense Minister Nakatani Gen says the ministry does not know if it fell inside Japan&#039;s Exclusive Economic Zone. But multiple sources told NHK it probably did not.
                
The Japan Coast Guard is in the area gathering information. As of 1 p.m. Japan time, it says there were no reports of damage to vessels in the area.
                
Some experts believe North Korea&#039;s intention was to react to the upcoming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
                
It could also have been a way to show off Pyongyang&#039;s missile development progress. North Korea last launched an alleged ballistic missile in November. Monday&#039;s launch is the first in 2025.
