Japan's Defense Ministry says North Korea launched what appeared to be a ballistic missile on Monday. It appears to have later fallen into the sea. The South Korean military says it was likely an intermediate-range ballistic missile, launched from near Pyongyang. Japan's Defense Minister Nakatani Gen says the ministry does not know if it fell inside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone. But multiple sources told NHK it probably did not. The Japan Coast Guard is in the area gathering information. As of 1 p.m. Japan time, it says there were no reports of damage to vessels in the area. Some experts believe North Korea's intention was to react to the upcoming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. It could also have been a way to show off Pyongyang's missile development progress. North Korea last launched an alleged ballistic missile in November. Monday's launch is the first in 2025.
