The death toll from Wednesday's powerful earthquake in Taiwan has risen to 13. Search and rescue efforts continue. More stranded people were brought to safety on Saturday as roads were repaired near Taroko Gorge in Hualien County. Rescue workers are operating cautiously, as tremors continue. Satellite data by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan confirmed crustal deformation across a roughly 30-kilometer-long area. That's nearly double the length of crustal movement in the 2018 quake that struck close to the focus of Wednesday's tremor. Also in Hualien, workers have begun demolishing a building left sharply tilting after the quake. Entry into homes and shops around the structure is restricted. The owner of a restaurant near the building said he cannot even begin to clean up his place and doesn't know when he can reopen. Around 150 people are staying in evacuation shelters in the county. In Japan, fundraising efforts are underway to help affected people in Taiwan. In Nagoya City, central Japan, members from a group promoting exchanges between Japan and Taiwan solicited donations on the streets.
