Construction of Indonesia's first high-speed train has been put temporarily on hold after a weekend accident killed two Chinese workers. The rail link is a major project in Beijing's "Belt and Road" initiative. A work train derailed on the new line in West Java province on Sunday. Officials said that two Chinese technicians died and four others were injured. The Transportation Ministry has suspended construction while the accident is investigated. The construction began in 2016 after China outbid Japan on the project. The rail link will connect Jakarta and the city of Bandung, about 140 kilometers away. In November, China's president Xi Jinping and his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo inspected the railway's progress through a video link. The line was supposed to have been operational in 2019, but poor planning and funding issues led to delays. Its launch is now planned for next June, but it remains unclear whether the accident will lead to a further delay.
