US military destroys Houthi missiles in Yemen NHK

The US military says it has destroyed anti-ship missiles in a Houthi rebel-controlled area of Yemen.

The US Central Command said its forces conducted strikes on three Houthi missiles that "were aimed into the Southern Red Sea and were prepared to launch."

It said it carried out the strikes on Friday at around 6:45 p.m. local time.

The Central Command said it determined the missiles presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region.

It added the action "will make international waters safe."

US media outlets report it is the sixth time the US military has struck Houthi sites.

The US government on Wednesday announced the designation of the Houthis as a specially designated global terrorist group.

But the rebels continue to carry out attacks on vessels in the region. They launched ballistic missiles into waters near a tanker on Thursday.
