The UN peacekeeping chief has expressed his strong concern over the situation in Lebanon, following Israeli attacks on a peacekeeping mission in the country.
                
UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix had an exclusive interview with NHK in Tokyo on Friday.
                
The Israeli military last month carried out attacks on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, which is engaged in a peacekeeping mission in the country&#039;s south. The attacks wounded some peacekeepers.
                
Lacroix visited the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, southern Lebanon, last week. He inspected its roof, which has a big hole, and damaged vehicles.
                
Lacroix told NHK that the current hostilities have massive impacts in terms of loss of life, displacement, and destruction. He added, &quot;This needs to stop.&quot;
                
He said the peacekeepers need to stay in Lebanon. He noted that diplomatic efforts are underway, and expressed hope that the efforts will lead to a ceasefire, with parties involved returning to the negotiating table.
                
Lacroix stressed the significance of UN peacekeeping operations when asked about their role amid a series of conflicts and fighting in the world.
                
He emphasized the inherent fragility of the peace that the peacekeepers are tasked with maintaining. He noted that a large number of civilians have been protected every single day by the peacekeepers. He added they prevent an &quot;unstable situation from becoming catastrophic or completely chaotic.&quot;
                
Lacroix said Japan is one of the most important countries supporting UN peacekeeping operations. He also said Japan is a &quot;political supporter, providing officers who we highly value&quot; and is &quot;providing financial support.&quot;  He said Japan&#039;s role is more critical than ever, particularly in a very difficult international environment.
